First Impressions

The Edifier S2000 Pro speakers make a big first impression. Physically, the bookshelf speakers are around the regular size (each measures 8 x 13.5 x 10.5-inches), but they are heavy. The pair combines to tip the scales at almost 40 pounds, with the right speaker marginally thicker than the left one since it houses the amplifiers and the power supply.

The speakers are very beautiful themselves. They’ve got a modern look, raked back at an angle, so the dual drivers point up slightly. Matte black paint is combined with thick wooden baffles with natural birch veneer on the sides and a removable, shaped metallic speaker grill. They rest on gold-colored pads to lift the speakers, decreasing the vibration.

The dial settings for volume, bass, and treble are on the back of the right speaker.

Audio Performance

When streaming via Bluetooth, the Edifier Pro speakers did a fine job. If you’re using an Android device, you should have a great experience—supporting aptX high-quality audio, but not Apple’s AAC—but even without AAC, the overall experience is much superior to a single wireless speaker. Not only is there a lot of power on tap (full enough to fill a wide room), but the huge woofer also pipes out the bass. And the audio is in true stereo.

The large aluminum cone woofer in a speaker cabinet with plenty of space and a bass port blends remarkably robust low-end performance. The tweeter had a crisp high end, while the mid-range and vocals were beautifully detailed.

The audio was tinted so marginally towards the warm side that it nicely matched to vinyl playback. In short, the S2000 Pro speakers delivered performance on par with a good selection of bookshelf speakers combined with a good stereo amplifier. Very sweet at under $400!

Connectivity

The Edifier S2000 Pro speakers support wireless networking with Bluetooth 4.0. So you can conveniently pair with a smartphone and download music from your preferred source—just like any Bluetooth wireless speaker. However, the right Edifier S2000 Pro speakers are also compatible with RCA, digital, COAX, and XLR audio inputs.

This means that you can physically connect a number of different audio sources to these speakers. For example, a computer, a TV, or a CD player. You can also connect a turntable as long as it has its own pre-amplifier. In fact, the turntable alternative is one of the major wins for the Edifier S2000 Pro speakers.

Turntables are getting more popular, but many owners are reduced to plugging them into a portable Bluetooth speaker. Instead, go for the Edifier S2000 Pro speakers, and the records would sound even better. The combo makes a lightweight, efficient stereo listening system.

Should You Buy It?

Edifier’s S2000 Pro powered bookshelf speakers are an ideal alternative to a conventional stereo system or a wireless speaker.

If you’re short on space or don’t have a budget for an amplifier and a pair of good bookshelf speakers, the Edifier S2000 Pro powered bookshelf speakers should make you extremely happy.
